With the death of Michael Jackson came an end to musical genius in his own way. This movie is that proof that he was talented with his music just as Beethoven was with his. ‘This Is It’ is more than just a film experience of the tour’s rehearsals. It’s a film that achieves more whether it that was the objective or not.
The movie is both correctly and incorrectly titled. Within the movie the viewer sees the final rehearsals of Jackson that became ‘it’. However to the fan it shows that the icon’s effect on this world through his music will live on. The movie isn’t a documentary, neither is it a movie concert like Hannah Montana had done previously. ‘This Is It’ takes what would never be seen of Jackson and allows the audience to see how he did what he did.
Throughout the movie the urge to sing along to your favorite Michael Jackson song was suppressed by what the eye saw. Watching this film the audience is easily captivated with the intense level of commitment from everyone around Jackson.
This wasn’t shot with a special lenses, lighting, or camera angels. Without all that the movie still told the story of Michael Jackson, the entertainer, and the man that had a vision that was much more than making music. Throughout the movie Jackson repeatedly said the word love. Making the level of sincerity of what you were watching even greater with the way he was using it.
This film let you wanting more, more to see or hear. Director Kenny Ortega did well telling the story of the Michael Jackson he saw and knew through the camera. At the end there was a longing for more from a movie called ‘This Is It’. The story was well told and the message easily received.
This movie served it’s purpose and in some peoples case may have went beyond. This is a great movie to see and when you do you will appreciate and listen to Jackson’s music in a subtle different way. My only wish is that this two week film become available on DVD for people to enjoy for years to come.
