With the new year comes new movies, and one of the most anticipated movies of the year, The Book of Eli, was released on January 15th. With Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman and Mila Kunis as the main characters, it was destined to be a good movie.

The movie has a feel of 300 because of the way it was filmed. The screen seems dark and is not as clear as it could be, but it adds to the story because the viewer begins to adjust to the lighting and it helps set the mood for the movie.

The story line follows Eli, played by Denzel Washington, as he goes on a quest to take his sacred book the the west in a destroyed and ridden world. The whole world was destroyed after a “flash” happened. It is assumed that there was a nuclear war that destroyed everything. He comes across many obstacles that his faith and goal help him overcome.

The end of the movie truly makes it a must see. People who were fans of the Sixth Sense will also love this movie. The movie seems mediocre until after you see the end and then it truly becomes great. The twist is something that is noticeable throughout the movie, but isn’t noticed by almost all people until the end.

Denzel does an amazing job playing as Eli and if someone enjoyed his other action movies such as Man on Fire or Deja Vu then they will enjoy his performance in this.

Gary Oldman plays Carnigie and is a wicked and ruthless ruler of a survivor town. His performance is very well put together and he does a great job of convincing people he is a terrible person.

The plot takes many twists and watchers begin the movie by learning how the new world is after the “flash.” The story line is confusing, but it explains itself very well as the movie goes on. The main theme is a hero/villain theme in which the hero has something that the villain wants and of course there is a girl to make things more complicated than it needs to be.

The Book of Eli is the best movie to release this year. Yes, it just barely edges out Avatar and is a must see. Fans of Avatar may not like this picture. It appeals to a different crowd and people who are large believers in faith will truly enjoy the movie. The Book of Eli is a great movie, but is not on the level of 300 and Saving Private Ryan.
