“Before I Fall” by Lauren Oliver was released on Mar. 2.  As Oliver’s debut novel it has much potential and hosts an extremely original storyline. Although it is very well written and reasonably interesting, it has some flaws that may turn off some readers depending on their book preferences.

The book is about a senior girl named Sam Kingston and how she relives the last day of her life over and over again after she dies in a car accident. Through her experience of living through her last day multiple times she learns about her life and her untimely death. She also begins to question the way she lived and how her life affected those around her. As a popular and outgoing student, she does not understand why she had to die. Eventually, she attempts to fix her last day, right her wrongs, and try to find out what events led to her death.

The book defiantly is not lacking when it comes to good points, since it has very many good things about it. The book’s interesting plot will pull readers into the story and make it hard for them to stop reading it for long. No other book is about the same things as “Before I Fall,” which will attract people who want to read something original. Another thing that would allow students to enjoy the book is the lessons that can be taught through the novel. The book touches on topics such as suicide, bullying, and the workings of high school social orders.

There are, of course, some things that may not attract a few readers. One of the things that may turn off readers is that there is quite a lot of cussing and some topics that may be uncomfortable for some. Some of those things mentioned are underage drinking, drugs, and sex.  Although the book deals with things in real life and high school students could easily relate, younger students should probably not read it. Also, students who prefer certain genres of books, such as romance or fantasy, may not enjoy it. Even though the book deals with the afterlife, it is very realistic and follows the everyday life of a teenage girl.

By reading “Before I Fall,” students can learn about life, love, and death, among many other themes. Students that do not like reading books with plenty of cuss words may not enjoy it, though. “Before I Fall” is a wonderful novel that many people will enjoy and remember for years to come.
