Recently released, Now That’s What I Call Music album 41, features a wide variety of songs from popular and not so popular artists of many genres.
The album starts off with the ever fun and sometimes awkward song, “Sexy and I know it” by LMFAO and continues with Katy Perry’s “One that got away”. The breakup song is beautiful, like most of Perry’s songs but has the tendency to tug on the heart strings.
“Marry the night” by Lady Gaga follows Perry’s song. Unfortunately, it’s not one of Gaga’s best. However, Jessie J recovers the dignity of the album with her song “Domino”. It’s upbeat, fun and full of life.
Gym Class Heroes song “Stereo hearts” featuring Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, is the best love song made in a while. Again, the album goes down hill with “5 O’clock” by T-Pain featuring Lily Allen. The only thing that can be understood in the song is that it was “5 o’clock in the morning” and the “conversation got boring”.
The album continues with it’s decent with “Work out” by J Cole. Though it had a catchy beat, that’s really all that can be said about it. “International love” by Pitbull and Chris Brown makes the album hit rock bottom. The song is upbeat and not terrible but it’s not that great either.
Breathe Carolina’s electro-rock song “Blackout” redeems the album. Amazingly, a Disney Channel star made a song worth listening to. With the help of the Scene, Selena Gomez soars with “Love you like a love song”. Gavin DeGraw, like always, steals hearts with yet another of his songs. His weapon of choice? “Not over you”, an emotion packed song on break ups.
Coldplay’s “Paradise” though good, takes a few tries to get use to it. However, ADELE’s break up song, “Someone like you” is more moving then DeGraw’s and tugs harder on the heartstrings then Perry’s.
Nickelback makes a huge improvement with “Lullaby”. Though many of their songs are over racy subjects, this one actually has some class. Following Nickelback, Luke Bryan’s song “I don’t want this night to end” had good intent but wasn’t great and only had bits of good lyrics.
Lastly, Toby Keith makes his way on to the NOW album with his recent song “Red solo cup”. I’ve heard a lot of stupid songs but this, by far, takes the cake. Keith could have done a lot better.
As always, bonus tracks are added to the end of each NOW album and usually they are worth discussion. Unfortunately, this time, they are more like penalties then bonuses. “Glad you came“ by The Wanted was the best of the four but still wasn’t great. “Blow up” by Sammy Adam’s was the second best of the bunch. “Somebody’s heartbreak” by Hunter Hayes and “Eat dirt” Susan Justice were two of the worst songs.
Though this album had flaws it had many perks that made up for it. There were more good songs than bad and would be a great CD to add to a music collection.
