Near the end of last year, the district enforced new rules on what should and shouldn’t be allowed in the vending machines and in the cafeteria. They decided to take all the junk food out of the machines and replace it with healthier choices. They replaced the drinks with sparkling water and the pop with diet and all the junk food with healthier choices.
With no fountain drinks in the cafeteria students are forced to drink milk or pay extra for water. Junior Brittney Younce said that since she is lactose intolerant it’s outrageous that she has nothing to drink with her lunch.
“I don’t want to pay extra money to get water at lunch,” Younce said. “I can’t drink milk and there’s nothing else so I go without, it’s ridiculous.”
Junior Jamie Veach said that taking everything out of the front of the cafeteria and putting it in the machines wasn’t the best idea.
“We have to pay more money for pop-tarts and other things now,” Veach said. “They raised the prices on some of the things in the machines now.”
Junior Bridget Castenada said that she doesn’t like the idea of changing.
“The pizza is greasy and there’s other greasy food in the cafeteria, why not change that instead of the drinks,” Castenada said. “The food is probably greasier and worse for you than the drinks are.”
Principal Virgil Poisal said that they decide what to put in the machines by their calorie and fat counts. They’re hoping to make everything in the machines 200 calories and below.
Student council will taste test the food in the vending machines to give the student’s opinion on the food that they have changed. They will be testing all the food and giving a review on it.

While I agree with the direction to encourage healthy eating within the school, I feel that water should be available as an alternative and not an extra charge.
