For many, getting paid to play a sport they love is just a dream. However, each year several students from BHS are talented enough to attract the attention from colleges around the country. Four BHS students signed letters of intent Jan. 28 to attend various colleges with sport related scholarships. Seniors Melissa Barnes, Ashley Colbern, Karlee Bobbitt and Cole Horn all signed during Channel One time alongside parents and coaches.
Barnes signed to MidAmerica Nazearene in Kansas City to play softball. Softball coach Jeff Davis gave a speech about the many strong points Barnes possessed.
“She is boot leather tough”, Davis said. “We won almost 100 games over the years she has started for us.”
Colbern will attend Missouri Valley in the fall to play softball. She is planning on majoring in business management. Colbern was Captain of the softball team, which set countless records this season. Davis said the school has very high expectations for Colberns future.
Bobbitt signed with Allen County Community College to play volleyball. Bobbitt holds part of the school record for most assists in a single season. Volleyball coach Eric Scherfenberg said the team would miss Bobbitt’s talent.
“We are excited for Karlee,” Scherfenberg said. “This is the fruition of many years of work.”
Horn signed a letter of intent to attend Ottawa Missouri in Kansas. Horn will play baseball and plans on studying in the field of exercise science.
Athletic Director George Shrum wrapped up the ceremony by wishing the athletes the best of luck with their future.
