With the first major dance of the year left only in the memories of students the second dance, Winter Warming, has already begun it’s festivities. Just like the other dances, this Monday marks the beginning of the Winter Warming spirit week.
This year’s theme for the dance, Candyland, has generated some excitement from students. The BHS Student Council made a point to come up with a ‘creative’ theme. Junior BHS Student Council Secretary Breanne Eagan went as far as buying a new Candyland game board as a model for the decorations.
“I think it’s a really cool theme,” Eagan said. ” It’s the best Winter Warming theme we have had planned for awhile.”
Just as any school dance there are many royalty nominees waiting on the voice of their peers to vote them to royalty. The Freshmen and Sophomore classes already have their royalty selected because they only have one royalty couple. Blake Mann and Mckenzie Sokolaski are the royalty for the Freshmen class, and Kyle Simmons and Alexis Vaughn represent the sophomores. Voting for royalty is more for the upperclassmen as the Juniors have three sets of royalty candidates and the Seniors have six. Junior candidates are Phillip Begaye and Erin Brouhard, Deion Lewis and Jordyn Williams along with John Gerhards and Kaite Yager. The Senior royalty candidates are Ben Brown and Shelby Stegemann, Brady Bunton and Monica Silber, Skyler Hibdon and Precious Vassol, Derek Fenzl and Lana Clary, Kody Stewart and Melanie Coleman and A.J. Haus and Debbie Cook.
To some, the news of being nominated for royalty wasn’t a big deal. To others, like junior candidate Jordyn Williams, the news brought excitement.
“I was so excited when I got the paper I jumped out of my seat,” Williams said.
Monday there was an assembly to kick off the Winter Warming spirit week. At the assembly the candidates was announced to the school for the first time after being nominated a week earlier.
The excitement of being royalty doesn’t only get to underclassmen, but can also get to seniors as well. The Winter Warming festivities proved that Senior candidate Precious Vassol is also susceptible to being nervous.
“When my name was announced and I walked out I was nervous,” Vassol said, “I had butterflies.”
Friday night the royalty candidates will be announced at the BHS Boy’s Basketball game against the Fort Osage Indians. The dance will occur Saturday, February 6. For students to get into the dance tickets are eight dollars per person, fifteen dollars for a couple and ten dollars at the door.
