This school year, during the week of Feb. 16-19, students are taking steps for pre-enrollment for classes they will take in the 2010-2011 school year. As with any other year, students should expect changes in the classes that will be offered. The biggest changes for next year are the inclusions of more agricultural sciences classes and engineering-related classes.

One of the new classes will be Introduction to Engineering Design (IED, for short). Previously, this class was only open to students at the Freshman Center, but next year it will be open to sophomores, as well. IED will deal with 3D solid modeling design software.

Another new class in the same area is Principles of Engineering (POE). The prerequisite to take this course is to have passed IED. This means that it will only be open to this year’s freshmen who took IED. In future years, it will be offered to more students, as IED will be offered to sophomores. POE is a course in major concepts that could be encountered in engineering studies.

Industrial Technology Teacher Rex Groom said he was looking forward to teaching these classes.

“I think it will be a challenge, ” Groom said. “We will also be getting a classroom upgrade with the addition of a projector and new desks that will have computers.”

He also said it would be a learning experience for everybody, including himself.

Both of these engineering classes are part of the new program known as Project Lead the Way. This means they are hands-on classes that have a real-world basis and that will prepare students for career readiness. College credit for these classes may become a possibility if students are able to pass end-of-course tests.

Sophomore Shawn Norman said he thought either of these classes would be fun to take.

“Etiher of the new classes could be interesting,” Norman said, “they are different than any other classes offered.

Agriculture Science II will be offered for next year, for the students who passed Agriculture Sciences I, another new class added in recent years. Agriculture Sciences II is an expansion of the first course diving deeper into similar studies. If things work out, for the 2011-2012 school year, the next level of Agricultural Sciences classes will be offered including specialized fields of study in areas such as horticulture, forestry, or landscape management.

Other new classes include Political Science 210, and College Biology and Lab. Classes that students will not be seeing in the future are Modern Social Issues, Psychology II (which was already dropped this year), Business Education, Business Co-op, Machine Metals, and Small Engine Repair.
