Belton High School debate students traveled to Platte County Fri. 19 and Sat. 20 for the Platte County Forensic Tournament, and they came out with some big wins.

Senior Lauren Tinch and her partner, junior Shannon Armond took first place in Duo Interpretation.  Senior Debbie Cook brought home two fourth-place medals in Prose Reading and Dramatic Interpretation.  Senior James Eldridge also made it to the super-session of Student-Congress, but did not place.

Debate coach Timothy Hughes said that it was a good tournament for them.

“We had about ten people reach the semi-finals for us, and four people finished in the finals,” Hughes said.

The next important tournament coming up is the Fort Osage tournament.  They also have the National Forensic League (NFL) districts and state finals soon.

Hughes said they did not have anyone reach nationals last year.

“This year, we hope to send at least one,” Hughes said.

To prepare for the upcoming tournaments, Hughes said students better get pretty darn serious.

“We’re in a pretty tough district,” Hughes said.  “Anyone who doesn’t take it seriously will be sitting out this summer, and will not be going to state finals.”
