While the debate and forensics season draws to and the BHS Debate and Forensics
took the opportunity to attend the Fort Osage tournament to prepare them for the District tournament.

As with most other weekends, the BHS debate team started off their weekend in yet another high school on another Friday night. This time Fort Osage was their tournament to take.

The BHS debate and forensics team took thirty-eight students to compete in last weekend’s tournament. They had twenty other schools and ten or more students from each school to compete with.

Friday night was for the first few rounds of forensics including individual events and duo interpretive acting. There were twenty-two BHS debate members made it past their guaranteed rounds and broke into the semi-finals. A couple of them later went to finals and won awards.

Senior Lauren Tinch turned heads as she took first place for her dramatic interpritation. After winning her new red first place trophy Tinch was found in the lobby showing off her award winning performance.

“I had a feeling I did good but I was still uneasy,” Tinch said. “I think it went really well and winning first plac proved it.”

Saturday morning started off early in the morning that would pay off for some by the end of the day. Those twenty-two individual and team debaters went head on with other debaters with hopes of making it to semi-finals. The BHS debate team managed send twelve to semi-finals and of those twelve eight made it to finals.

Freshmen twins Jessica and Rachael Jacobs, first time debating on the varsity circuit, won second place in policy debate. While seasoned debate partners Senior Jonathan Stacy and Junior Patrick McMahon won first place in varsity Policy debate.

“It went well,” McMahon said. “The competition really prepared us for districts, which will be challenging but I feel we are ready.”
Going into the districts the BHS Debate and Forensics team proves they are prepared for districts with their third place sweepstakes finish as a team.

This tournament really prepared us for districts, and as a result, we had a better showing at the district tornament then we did last year, including i. At FO, i made it to supersession, and won 5th place in congressional debate. At the district tournament, i made it to round 4, defeating rockhurst and lee’s summit west, but unexpectedly falling to Garrett Poorman from Raytown south, and Clay Renolds, one of lee’s summit’s debaters.
