Some of BHS best power lifters will be travelling to Kearney, Missouri to compete in the fourth annual Kearney High School Powerlifting Meet. There will be three divisions to compete in including junior and senior men’s, freshmen and sophomore men’s division, and freshmen to senior women’s division.
This will be the second of the three power lifting meets that BHS will be competing in. This time around, there will be twenty-five lifters going apposed to the three they took to the last tournament. In that last tournament the three lifters that went put on a good show and at this tournament BHS’ power lifters will be able to battle for a first place trophy.
Coach Eric Sherfenburg will be taking the students to the meet, and for the past few weeks, has been preparing them in their advanced physical fitness class.
“What this tournament is about is for the lifters to attain and break their personal best,” Sherfenburg said. “All the lifters have an opportunity to be top five in their class.”
This is the second time this year BHS is sending lifters to a meet and among those with the competition experience is senior Ronnie Scott. Scott is coming from an award winning performance from the past lifting meet and is looking to do just as good if not better in Kearney.
“I am pumped. I think this will be a tougher competition, but I’m just going in there focused on doing what I can do,” Scott said.
With twenty-two new power lifters headed to Kearney, there is some eagerness and excitement among the team. Junior Darrion Rogers is ready to get there and start lifting against some of the area’s best lifters.
“I’m excited and I’m ready to go,” Rogers said. “I’m hoping for a fourth place finish or higher.”
The Kearney High School Powerlifting Meet will be holding competitive lifts in bench, squat, and power clean in each weight class. Medals will be awarded for the best lift in each of those lifts, in each class, for first, second, and third place. The best over-all lifters will be awarded trophies and a team trophy will be given to the first and second place team totals.
