FCCLA is sponsoring a new canned food drive to help provide food for teens in our schools. Students can bring in non-perishable items to their first and fifth hour classes.  The canned food drive will run from Apr. 5- 30.

The food brought in will be packed into backpacks and given out to teens who have no food. The main purpose of the canned food drive is to give the kids in our school food for the weekend. Some students eat only two meals a day, breakfast and lunch provided by the school, and go hungry over the weekend.

FCCLA has done a number of different community service activities and food drives. FCCLA organized STOP the violence and B-Town, and have done presentations for children in SACC. FCCLA has been involved in supplying food for other people within the community as well.

So far, there are 10-12 backpacks of food going out to students every week. FACS teacher Heather Bratcher said that FCCLA should be giving out around 30 backpacks of food a week.

“There are still a lot of students who go home and don’t have food for the weekend,” Bratcher said. “We need to supply more than 10 backpacks a week.”

Child development Kimberly Delapp and Bratcher are in charge of FCCLA, both are really excited about the food drive and hope to feed as many hungry students as possible.

“I like that this is students helping other students in our school,” Delapp said. “We see these kids every day, and it’s great that we can help them.”

FCCLA is looking to better the community in any way possible, whether that be cleaning the streets or providing for students in need.

To give students a little motivation to bring in canned foods, the first or fifth hour class with the most points by Apr. 30 will win a nacho party.
