A parent faces the constant fear of the threats daily life presents to his or her child.  This fear gives birth to their worst nightmare that this threat could end their child’s life.  Although parents know they cannot protect their children from everything, they still worry that the next call could be more than just the typical, everyday call, and instead, a call that could break their hearts.  Parents, Rhonda and Jim Beckford experienced this fright when their daughter Kara Kopetsky did not return home. Now, almost three years later, Kopetsky has been missing ever since May 4, 2007.

There have been several troubling and unfounded rumors flying around about Kopetsky’s disappearance, such as one about her cell phone being found, then her clothes, and even her body, but no actual evidence has been discovered, and the last claimed sighting of Kopetsky accompanied by a young man in Louisburg, Kansas May 21 remains unconfirmed.  The May 4 footage of Kopetsky, recorded in the halls at Belton High School where she attended school, still remains to be the last confirmed sighting.

Despite the fact that no traces have shown up regarding the case, a search began on the morning of Wed. 7 in south Kansas City.  More than 200 FBI agents, Belton police, Cass County Sheriff’s Department officers and U.S. Marines gathered from about 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  The search over a 400-acre wooded area, near East 155th Street and U.S. 71, did not turn up any new information.

The following day, another search, which focused around two ponds in the same area, took place.  Members of the Lee’s Summit Underwater Rescue and Recovery Unit spent the day searching the murky ponds.  After a water level had been drained from the smaller of the two ponds and searched, divers went down into the larger pond.  Police did not make any discoveries during Thursday’s search.  There is no word on what prompted the searches.

Kopetsky’s family and friends plan to hold a walk in her memory.  The annual event will take place May 2 at 2 p.m. at the Cedar Tree Shopping Center in Belton.  It is being held as a way to honor Kopetsky and also in order to keep the case in the public eye.
