The Belton Vision Team met on Wednesday afternoon to discuss plans to improve the community for Belton’s youth and future. Thirty students from Belton High School, along with three students from Heartland Academy participated in the Vision Team, and made suggestions that could bring happiness and joy to Belton’s youth.
The meeting started with introductions of the Vision Team members, a few council members and the Mayor of Belton, Jimmy Odom. Students were then split into brainstorming groups for three subjects; entertainment, public works, and community improvement.
One idea that was frequently proposed was to add a Chipotle or a Chick-Fil-A to Belton’s restaurants. Another idea was to reconstruct the Belton Town Center to emulate the Town Center in Lenexa, Kansas.
According to The Vision Team’s Facebook page, the overriding motivation of the Belton Vision Team is to foster unity and collaboration throughout the community. It is a priority to always make projects and events positive and worthwhile; and to recognize the efforts of local residents who devote time and energy to make Belton thrive.
Sophomore Matt Black said that it seemed like the Vision Team’s members really took the student’s ideas to heart.
“I loved how they took our ideas into consideration,” Black said. “It felt like our thoughts as students actually mattered to them.”
Junior Sarah Sveom said that the Vision Team made the student’s feel like their voices were heard.
“I really liked that I had a chance to say what I wanted changed in the community,” Sveom said.
The next Vision Team meeting will be May 20 at 7 p.m. at the City Hall Annex. The Vision Team is pushing students to attend meetings so that they can hear and connect with specific students, and their ideas on how to improve the community. This is a perfect opportunity, as students, to speak out for the community, and make improvements that could better the town we live in.
