Two Belton sophomores, Ashleigh Parrott and Luke Pierce, have been selected to join 330 students around the sate in a three week academic program called the Missouri Scholarship Academy. The program is being held at the University of Missouri-Columbia, June 13 through July 3. Students will be staying in dorm rooms on campus for the duration of their trip.
Parrott and Pierce were selected based on their scores on an IQ test, their GPA, essay entries, and the commitment to remain at the Academy throughout the entire three week experience. Students were required to choose a subject to major and a subject to minor in for three weeks.
The majors range from All Things Flying and Falling, to Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way: Shakespeare Today. The minors range from Forensics, to Youth Saves World. Parrott has chosen to major in Marine Biology, and minor in Mathematical Mazes for the Mind; while Pierce has chosen to minor in Games.
“I’m really looking forward to living away from home for three weeks,” Parrott said.
Pierce said that he is really looking forward to the three weeks to hang out at the University of Missouri, which he says is his favorite college, and he plans to attend the University of Missouri after high school.
“I also can’t wait to get out of Belton for three weeks,” Pierce said.
Last year, Belton sent juniors Dustin Hayden and Chris Bechtel to the Missouri Scholars Academy. Bechtel said that it takes a while to get used to the dorm room, and the new people.
“It was cool meet other gifted students from around the state,” Bechtel said. “It really was like nerd camp.”
Students will not only be taking classes while on campus, they will also have the opportunity to socialize, and have some free time to explore and just have fun at the University of Missouri. On weekends, the Academy holds extracurricular events, like debate, photography club, theater, chorus, art workshops, creative writing classes, and many more fun activities.
The Missouri Scholars Academy will look for two of next year’s sophomores to attend the three week experience, they will have the opportunity to apply throughout next school year.
