Gossip isn’t good for students

Many teenagers gossip and spread rumors about people. Some students gossip for fun or selfish reasons and others gossip without even meaning to by just repeating things that they have heard. One of the main things students gossip about is each other. Gossip is not a good thing in any way. It can hurt a lot of people’s feelings and make them feel bad about themselves.

One of the major problems with gossip is that sometimes the gossip isn’t even true. Although something might start off true, spreading it from person to person could change what people are saying. People who spread the gossip might leave a part out, or change stuff. Thus, the things students spread are just false rumors. Students hear some interesting news about someone and start to tell everyone they know before they stop to think about its possible effects or check to see if it is true or not. If the gossip does have even a little bit of truth it could easily embarrass the student it is about. Most people do not want their personal business spread throughout the entire school for everyone to know about. Even if the rumors are revealed to be false, it would be difficult to take it back because once it is out there, no one can erase it from everyone’s mind. They would not forget what they heard and may never learn it was not true.
Some students in high school start rumors on purpose to intentionally hurt people they do not like. They might do this to hurt their “enemie’s'” reputations or to make themselves seem better. They make up stories just to be mean to others. Gossip just proves to everyone how wicked teenagers can be to each other. Gossip can backfire, though, if someone finds out that the person who started the rumors just did it to hurt someone else and it had no truth to it.

I think that students should stop gossiping and starting rumors. Gossiping has very negative side effects for everyone involved. Even if something really did happen to someone or someone did something, students should not spread it around because it could be embarrassing and it could change the person’s life for the worse. Gossip can never help someone because it changes people’s opinion about them based on things that might not be true or things that never happened.
