At the turn of a new decade we are faced with many difficulties, and the weight of the world’s newest decade was added to with the devastation in Haiti. Thousands trapped under rubble and many more left homeless without sufficient water and food. The rest of the world was looked upon to go aid the people in need.

The United States alone as of the tenth of January had already spent 787 million dollars, which is around one dollar per person in the country. But this leaves the question on many people’s mind: why not help here in our country? With so much going on here why does it take a massive devastation for people to feel so giving?

By sending the money to Haiti people feel good about giving just as it giving does during the holiday. Our country’s government, wealthy, celebrities and even us students have answered the humanitarian call to action. The is no doubt that the relief efforts will help the people of Haiti in a much needed time.

This article isn’t saying those who gave shouldn’t have given to a country in much need. Instead it’s a question to all people of why not answer the call to do good because there is a need? Why is it that it takes hundreds of thousands of people to be homeless and around 150 thousands dead for people to take action? In this country we are faced with homelessness, people that can’t afford to pay for needed medicine, and orphans here waiting for a family to come take them home.

At this time in history the people of Haiti are in need of assistance. Let us not for get about those in our country, our state and even our neighbors that need a helping hand.
