Spirit Week needs a makeover

Spirit Week is supposed to be an opportunity for students to show their support for the school. However, many students don’t even attempt to participate in the planned themes for each day of the week. Even some teachers seem to resist Spirit Week; maybe it is seen as a waste of time.
The biggest issue with Spirit Week is that there aren’t enough students who participate. This is in part because of the themes for each day aren’t creative or they are too complicated. Take Candy Land day or favorite fast food day as examples. How can anyone dress as Grandma Nut or something that has to do with fast food? They would have to buy a costume, and who would be willing to buy a costume just for Spirit Week? What happened to the simple Spirit Week days, like crazy hair day, sock day, or miss-match day? Simple themes can be fun too; they don’t have to be over-thought or complicated to be a success among the students.
Another problem is that StuCo needs to bring more attention to Spirit Week. The posters that they put up are too subtle for anyone to even notice them. They need to do something more to get the student body to recognize that it is Spirit Week. It would be better if the posters had bright colors with bold writing. It would also help if they put more posters up, perahaps near the office or in the forum area.
BHS needs to be more spirited; students should support the sports teams and go to the games. The pep assemblies could also be more fun. It wouldn’t hurt to have various activities planned during the assembly. STUCO and the teachers need to think of more ways to pump up the students and get them excited. The more excited the students get, the more they will want to support the school. Hopefully, a good makeover to the attitude of BHS will make the school more fun and actually make it more spirited.
Many people may think that an inspirited school is unimportant, but it will make the school come together and cheer for BHS. School spirit is one of the most important ingredients to a close-knit school community. The closer the school is, the more fun everyone can have during Spirit Week and school events.
