Video games harvest negative effects

While many students enjoy killing their free time with an extra curricular activity or working on homework, many others said they like to play video games. Many popular video games, such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3, and Left 4 Dead 2 become an addition and can desensitize anyone who plays these violent video games. However, many students also argued that video games provide real-life situations and are a major source of entertainment.

Many students, including sophomore Astry Sosa, said they think that video games are fun, but also agreed that playing these video games increases violence. Sosa explained why she enjoys playing games such as Halo.

“Halo is fun because the guns are better than the ones in Call of Duty,” Sosa said. “I think that lots of people play video games because you get addicted after the first few times you play it. It usually gets violent when I play, because I scream at the screen.”

Other students, such as sophomore Joey Brockland, said that video games are strictly recreational and present real-life situations to players.

“I think video games are fun because you can back-talk people online,” Brockland said. “It’s a time killer, like reading a book, but more interactive. Kind of like you’re in the story.”

Video games also affect the way students interact with one another, as well as family members. Students like sophomore Taylor Brown said they think video games distract students from more other, more important things.

“I think it’s annoying when my boyfriend plays video games because I’m trying to talk and he’s not paying attention. He usually takes forever to reply to a question because he’s so zoned-out,” Brown said. “And it also increases bad language because the teen-rated games already use cuss words, so people just follow the example.”

Sophomore Josh Allred said that video games take away time to do more important things such as school work. He also said that video games take away a close, personal relationship between people and makes society more cold.

“Video games are a waste of time. They affect your grades and increase your aggressiveness,” Allred said. “I think it makes society more cold. It is also distracting to more important things.”

Although video games are fine in moderation, students tend to use them more often than they should, which creates a more violent and colder society.

NO QUOTES! ! ! Opinion stories aren’t supposed to have quotes. I’m tired right now, and I just realized this, but it can’t be tolerated. We follow rules and this rule states that opinion stories don’t use quotes. I had James change a piece that had this same problem. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Probably shouldn’t have argued about this via the actual article, it’s pretty un-professional looking.
