The Olympics are one of the world’s favorite past times. They bring a sense of unity to the world when everyone joins together to acomplish one of humanity’s basic instincts: compete. The Olympics have been a running tradition since the times of the ancient Greeks. However, a big debate has arisen: which is better, summer or winter Olympics?

While the winter Olympics have enjoyable sports, such as figure skating or the luge, the summer Olympics attract a wider audience because of the various sports involved. The summer Olympics feature swimming, gymnastics as well as volleyball and many others.

It’s no secret that much of the American population enjoyed watching Michael Phelps win a total of eight gold medals in the last summer Olympics. The winter Olympics were created in the shadow of the summer Olympics because of their success with over 25 different sports played every four years.

The Olympic Games, both summer and winter, bring importance to cities all around the world; the United States has held 4 summer Olympics, making it the country with the most summer Olympics held across the world. While many people enjoy how the winter Olympic games bring around more aggressive sports, such as hockey, the summer Olympics feature a wider variety of sports that support a larger range of audiences.

The United States, in particular, has a decreased amount of winter sports because our seasons are based more heavily in the summer climate. Countries such as Norway or Canada have a better chance to win the Olympics in the winter because recreational activities during the winter are more popular, making skiing and ice skating more popular than sand volleyball or gymnastics.

Many Americans enjoy the opportunity to compete with countries all over the world and show different talents that lots of individuals spend a lot of time working on. However, it is fair to say that the summer Olympic games have a wider audience than the winter Olympics in America as well as across the world because of their variety of sports that are held at the Games as well as the opportunity to win in more sections because of the increased popularity of summer-related sports in the United States.
