The Belton Pirates football team lost their season opener 26-34 to the Platte County Pirates. Belton lead 26-13 in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold the Platte County pirates offense as they scored three touchdowns in the final quarter of the game.

Belton had a great running game with starting senior running back Glen Whitney who rushed for 222 yards with three touchdowns on 28 attempts.

Belton Quarterback Jake Jones threw for 51 yards and rushed for over 60 yards with a twenty-one yard touchdown to receiver David Hurley.

Belton’s assistant coach Justin Hamilton prepared the team for their game and they played well in their game.

“Key plays of the game were Belton’s defense holding Platte County to a field goal close to the end zone.” Hamilton said. “Glen Whitney rushing for over 200 yards really helped the team’s offense out.”

Key injury in the game was Belton’s strong safety Ben Brown injuring his leg during the game. He broke both his Fibula and Tibia.

“While Brown was running the ball down the field on a kickoff return someone rolled his leg while tackling him and snapped his leg,” Hamilton said. “Brown will be out the rest of the season and will be replaced by junior Cameron Myers.”
