A victory for the Varsity Boys soccer team kicked off the season on August 31 at the annual Lee’s Summit West tournament. The final score was 2-1, defeating William Chrisman.

The team played a close game throughout. The tight score brought a challenge to the team, but in the end they won. Coach David Mannell said he thought the team was ready for the tournament.

“They are very prepared. We did a lot of fitness work, and they are in good shape,” Mannell said. “We have a lot of good leadership this year.”

Mannell also said that he is anxious to see how the team will do in future games so he can know how they are progressing, and so he knows what the boys need to work on during each practice.

“This is a big test to see where we are doing this early in the season,” Mannell said. “This is a big tournament with a lot of good teams.”

Along with a team’s good skills, luck also helps. Senior Abel Arreola wears his lucky jersey to every game, which paid off when he scored one of the goals during the game.

“It was the first soccer shirt I had. It’s how I decided I wanted to play soccer,” Arreola said. “It has number one on the back of it to remind me that I’m number one.”

The game had its strong points, but there is always room for improvement. Sophomore Austin Curnutt said the team needs to work on a few things for the next game.

“We could think ahead more,” Curnutt said. “And also communicate with each other more.”

Overall, the Varsity Boys soccer game was a huge test to see what they need to work on, there is no such thing as perfection for these boys. They played hard during the game and will continue to work on their skills to improve throughout the season.
