Belton volleyball battles Titans

The varsity volleyball team took a loss against Lee’s Summit West’s Titans Tuesday, Sept. 8.  The score remained tight until the end when they started to struggle.  The first match ended 20-home and 25-visitor.  They won the second match 25-22, and then lost it all in the third match, 4-25.

The team started out leading off of senior Karlee Bobbitt’s serves, but once they lost the ball they fell a little behind.  Despite Karlee Bobbitt’s attempt to motivate the team, they lost the first match with a close score.

The second match didn’t start out too well due to dropped balls.  Then the team made a come back.  Junior Courtney Cornell served an ace, Karlee Bobbitt and freshman Logan Allen had an excellent block, and Karlee Bobbitt slipped a spike through the middle of the opposing team’s block, leaving the score tied 17-17.

Family members and friends went wild, stomping and cheering, as the pirates pulled ahead 21-17.  After another tied score of 22-22, the team pushed through and won the match.

The girls made it to the third match and they seemed ready for it.  The match’s results proved otherwise.

The team had trouble returning number eight’s serves.  Lee’s Summit West gained 12 points on them off the serves.  The lady pirates lost their fight as the opposing team’s number ten finished the game.

Although the game counts as a loss the team still achieved a first.  Coach Eric Scherfenberg said the Belton varsity volleyball team has never won a match against the titans, so they succeeded in changing that in the second match.

“It was a big accomplishment winning the second match,” Scherfenberg said. “It’s Lee’s Summit West’s three-time defending championship in the state finals.”

Scherfenberg said he thought the girls absolutely played to their fullest potential in the first and second games, but not in the third game.

Senior Aleta Lucero said the loss against Lee’s Summit West was frustrating.

“But it showed the potential that we have,” Lucero said.

Sophomore Jordan Catanzaro said she felt proud of the second game for beating the titans, but not the third.  She said the team didn’t play their best in the third game.

“The third game we got a little rattled,” Catanzaro said.

Junior Haley Coovert said the second game’s score made her proud, while the third game’s score did not.

“Our biggest mistake was probably not communicating when we were down.”
