In past years, Belton has had a fair share of athletes who have been amazing at what they do. From wrestling to football, there have been many that have caught they eye of the ones they have competed against. Two years ago all eyes were on Senior David Benson for his state championship title in wrestling. This year there is an athlete that has caught everyone’s eyes in a sport that hasn’t had the best of luck, soccer.
A young foreign exchange student named Stian Lockert, has come all the way from Norway to experience America. He has not just been enjoying the new culturethough, Lockert has been turning heads with his performance on the soccer field. The boy’s soccer team has had pretty talented athletes come from all over, but Lockert ranks as one of the top foreign exchange players for soccer that have ever come through Belton High.
From the first day of practice, the boy’s soccer team fell in love with this Norwegian powerhouse. Senior Tanner Jones said that Lockert is a great addition to the team.
“He’s a gift from God,” said Jones. “It’s like he is walking on water when he has the ball.”
Lockert has other coaches from around the area asking about him before they even play. After a game is played, it seems like his name spreads like a common cold. The coach from Vanhorn was so impressed by Lockert that he said he was going to try to get him looked at by colleges so he can continue playing.
Lockert isn’t just good because of what others say about him. Recently a coaches poll was done and Lockert was voted into the Missouri Elite 11. This title is voted on weekly by the coaches around the nearby area and is considered quite an honor. Very few or maybe even no soccer players from Belton have ever received this award before. Lockert said that he feels a sense of accomplishment in this award.
“It makes me feel very happy to be chosen for such a list,” Lockert said.
With Lockert’s scoring and play-making, the boy’s soccer team has become the best it has been in a long time. The boys have high hopes for the season and hope to make this year’s season one to remember.
