The Lady Pirate golfers took third in districts last week at Hoot’s Hallow in Pleasant Hill. The five varsity girls who played were seniors Callie Porter and Kelsey Maurer, and sophomores Nikki Hutchinson, Gina Brancato, and Brooke Collins.
This year the girls have some strong senior leadership, but also get some needed help from the sophomore class.
The only teams that beat the girls were St. Teresa’s and Sion, both being girls only private schools. Porter said the competition was better than she has seen in awhile. All of the girls are very proud of the fact that they beat Ray-Pec.
“The competition was great. I played with girls from Grandview, St Teresa’s and Sion,” Porter said. “I think playing with better people makes you want to do better.”
During their round the weather was not formidable for golf. Throughout the round it was rainy and windy all day. The weather effected the play and Collins said it that it didn’t help her in any way.
“The wind affected most people, it sucked,” Collins said.
Porter was the only girl who qualified for state. She had to shoot an 88 to qualify. She plays on Monday and Tuesday the 19th and 20th in Nixa, Missouri. State is the final event of the year for the lady pirate golfers as they finished their season strong with their third place finish in districts.
