With the gym decorated with purple and gold streamers and balloons for Senior Night, Thursday, Oct. 22, the lady Pirates hosted a volleyball game against the visiting Fort Osage Indians. The varsity girls took yet another win in their last home game of the season.
The Pirates added up their points early on in the first game during junior Sarah McMilian’s serves. They kept the ball until junior Desiree Johnson was called for a double hit, leaving the score 7-4.
The Indians pulled ahead of the Pirates, 9-11, by positioning multiple kills in the holes in the court. Belton didn’t allow their opponents to gain too much on them as they started working more as a team.
McMilian challenged Fort Osage by strategically placing an attack in the far back corner of the court, giving the Pirates the lead again with a score of 16-13. From there, the team lost their lead when the Indians surpassed them, 19-20.
Many tied scores occurred at the end of the first game, as the two teams passed the control of the ball back and forth. The lady Pirates finally claimed the game, winning 25-22.
At the start of the second game, junior Courtney Cornell slid across the floor for a serve that managed to slip over the net but couldn’t get to the ball in time. Halfway through the game, Johnson tactically placed the ball in a hole between the Indians’ players. The Pirates led 12-9 after Cornell had an amazing dig on a dive.
The team continued to lead, as sophomore Jordan Catanzaro served an ace, leaving the score 18-12. A few rallies later, Cornell turned the score to 22-14 when she drove an intimidating kill into the ground. Belton won the second game 25-14, making them victorious over Fort Osage.
Coach Eric Scherfenberg said the team met the expectations for the game against Fort Osage.
“We knew that Fort Osage was a tough team,” Scherfenberg said.
Scherfenberg said the team was a little out of system in the first game. He said they played better in the second game.
“Towards the end we really forced them to make a lot of mistakes,” Scherfenberg said. “We made it difficult for them at the close of the game.”
Senior Karlee Bobbitt said she thought the game was very intense and emotional.
“It was really exciting,” Bobbitt said.
Catanzaro said the team played to their fullest ability, as they did in Tuesday’s night game against North Kansas City.
With 21 wins for regular games, Scherfenberg said Belton varsity volleyball had a very good season.
Following the game, Belton fans remained seated in the stands to honor the two senior varsity players, Karlee Bobbitt and Aleta Lucero. The recognition was an emotional experience for the girls and their families.
