The BHS boys soccer team finished their season with a 2-1 loss to Ray-Pec. The team battled throughout the game and had some questionable calls from the refs. This was the last game for the senior Cade Arnold and many other seniors had problems going out the way they did.
“We played well and we deserved the chance to tie the game, but the ref made a call that he even said was questionable,” Arnold said. “It hurt, and I wish there was something we could do about it.”
The pirates started the game slow and didn’t have the intensity they needed. They quickly went down 2-0 in the first 20 minutes. They showed some spark when Senior Stian Lockert had a break away and got fouled in the box to earn a penalty kick. Unfortunately he missed that penalty kick to tie the game at 2-1.
“I don’t want to mention it,” Lockert said. “Don’t even mention it.”
The game went to half with the score at 2-1. The boys were able to get a hold of their emotions and come out playing well in the second half. Senior Steven Campbell had a great chance to tie the game up, but his shot sailed high. Late into the second half the boys had another great attack but it was called offsides by the ref. Many people booed and disagreed with the call.
Senior Carlos Salcido and Lockert were racing toward the goal but the ref called Lockert offsides when he stopped and wasn’t part of the play.
“It made me angry,” Lockert said. “I wanted to hurt him.”
The game ended 2-1, but the boys felt like they deserved the win. Coach David Mannell said it was a good game and they had a good season.
“It was a tough loss. We outplayed them. It was a good end to the season though,” Mannell said.
This was the last of boys soccer for 2009, but the Belton pirate girls team will play soccer this spring.

The last play was NOT offsides!
