Belton lost their sixth straight to Raytown South on Monday, 56-23.  Senior Ryan Schmidt and Junior Zac Sweets lead the way in scoring with 7 points each.

The Pirates put up one of their best defensive stands of the season allowing a team that scored 77 points against Belton last year to score just 56 points. The Pirates have shown a huge improvement on defense, playing with a greater intensity and will to preform well.

Belton Started the game shooting two foul shots due to a technical foul on Raytown South for dunking during warm ups. With the technical, the pirates were able to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead.

From then on the Pirates continued to struggle against the press, and took quick shots that just wouldn’t fall. Their defense was outstanding, keeping Raytown South from going on a huge run.

Pointguard Kyle Simmons said that the Pirates’ defense was the best of the season, even if the offense wasn’t productive.

“It was one of our strongest performances on defense,” Simmons said.  “I really hope we can play that well again.”

Coach Greg Martin said that the Pirates’ defense is progressively getting better throughout the season.

“To hold a team like Raytown South, as talented as they are, to just 56 points is an awfully good effort,” Martin said.

The Pirates are hoping to keep improving, on defense and especially on offense.  They need to get their shots to fall, if they can make shots and keep up the effort on defense, Belton has a very good chance of collecting their first win of the season.
The Pirates have just one more game before Winter Break.  They will travel to Lee’s Summit West on Wednesday in the hopes of ending the first half with a victory.
