Pirates make Bulldogs baseball walk the plank

The Belton Pirates baseball team went out on Wednesday, Apr. 21 with one thing on their mind and that was to win. They did just that by beating a struggling Grandview Bulldogs team by a final score of 16-6.

Starting pitcher Jake Jones took the mound in the first inning and the third hitter powered a homerun over the fence to put the Pirates down by a score of 1-0. However, Jones never allowed another run to cross the plate while he was on the mound the rest of the night. He allowed only a few hits during the rest of the game and the outfield and infield stayed strong and helped out their pitcher.

Two key batters in the game were Jones and senior Nick Livingston, they were both able to get the team 5 of there 16 runs. Livingston drove in two runs with a double in the second inning to help pad the lead on the Bulldogs; they were able to take a 6-1 lead in the second inning that the Pirates would hold onto for the rest of the game. The fourth inning was Jones’ time to shine when he blasted one into center field, clearing the fence and building up a 12-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, after Jones left the mound, junior Phillip Begaye closed out the game. The Grandview team went on a hitting streak off Begaye and drove in 5 runs, forcing the team to go to 5 innings instead of calling the game at the end of the fourth. The Pirates took a 12-6 lead into the fifth inning. The Pirates scored the final four runs in the fifth inning, forcing the umpire to call the game because of the ”mercy rule”. The game is called whenever on team has a ten run lead over the other team.

The infielders played great, allowing no balls to roll past them into the outfield and making catchable throws to the infielders to allow the easy out. The infield was even able to pick a runner off at third as he attempted to steal third. The Pirates could have been in some major trouble if this part of their game had been weak because there were a lot of grounders that went to the shortstop, which could have allowed a few extra runs if not a loss.

The outfielders also were able to keep the batters from getting easy singles by catching the pop ups to the outfield and not allowing the runner to get on base.

Despite the 16-6 score, this game was a little closer this time compared with the 24-2 win the Pirates inflicted on the Bulldogs earlier this year. This victory should boost the teams confidence for the rest of the season.
