The Belton Pirates hosted the track and field surburban league confernece championships this week, Belton placed last and the Lee’s Summit Titans took both the girls and boys championship.
Belton girls track struggled as they tried hard but just couldn’t seem to keep up with the competition as they were unable to score any points during the two days of events. Lee’s Summit West girls dominated the competition as they were able to score a total of 72.5 overall points in the meet, as second place North Kansas City received 35.5 points and 3rd place Fort Osage received 25.5 points.
Belton boy’s track also had some trouble as they could only rack up a total of 8 points thanks to Trey Ryan and Shawn Norman’s performances on Thursday night. Lee’s Summit West Titans boys just edged out Raytown for first place as the Titans received 59 points overall and Raytown scored a total of 56 points. These two teams gave it all they had but in the end Lee’s Summit was able to come out of the meet victorious. Third place went to Raytown South as they were able to earn a total of 31 points just edging out Fort Osage who received 26 points.
Sophomore Shawn Norman and senior Trey Ryan were the two standouts for Belton. Trey Ryan was able to place 7th on the 1600 meter run. Two others who were able to place in that race as Freshman Brian Zuiss was able to finish in 10th and senior Albert Kelley was able to get a 14th place finish. Norman was able to place 3rd in the pole vault.
Also for the boys junior varsity freshman Todd Charles was able to place third in the 200 meter dash, along with sophomores Trevor Peery placing 7th, and Micah Wright with an 8th place finish. For the JV, Brian Zuiss finished 5th in the 800 meter run.
The Pirates were a young team and will most likely get better as time progresses. Many of the freshman and sophomore will have a year of experience under there belts so they will be able to get a feel for the competition at that level and work on improvements, which would make the team stronger next season and hope to gain a few places in the final standings next year at conferences.
The teams overall performance was average as they struggled with inexperience compared to the others teams: Lee’s Summit West, Fort Osage, Raytown South, Raytown, and North Kansas City as all the teams were able to place first in an event during conferences Thursday night.
