The lady Pirates had a very exciting and physical game against the tough rival from Fort Osage, but where able to pull out a very impressive 66-65 win. The girls had already played the Indians twice this year and they split both of the other contest, but they were both played at the Indians home.
The lady pirates have create a rival this year with very rough and physical games against Fort Osage. Both of their other games had been physical and words had been exchanged back and forth. Both groups of girls had problems with each other and things to settle among each other. Senior Callie Porter even made a sign for the crowd to hold up during the game, but it was quickly taken after administration say it.
“I freaking hate them. They called us fat and called us strippers,” Junior Erika Harder said.
The rivalry between teams created a physical and emotional match up, but that always happens when you get a group of girls together. The first quarter the lady pirates came out quick and their lead stayed around 5 points. The only way that the Indians were consistently scoring was from behind the three point line.
The game continued to be physical and the teams were both running the floor well. The teams went into half with the lady pirates up by eight, but it was evident that the lady pirates were tired because of lack of bench depth from injuries.
The second half the game stayed close, but the Indians were pulling themselves quickly back into the game. The game went toe-to-toe with each team trading buckets until late in the fourth quarter. The Indians made a late surge to put themselves up five with only three minutes, but the Pirates had been keeping Senior Precious Vassol on the bench because of an injury.
Vassol came into the game and gave the Pirates the energy they needed to make a late surge and got themselves back into the game. The game was down to the final 12 seconds with the Pirates down by one and the ball in the lady Pirates hand. The ball as inbounded to Vassol and she streaked down the left court side and threw up a behind the back prayer with no time on the clock. The ball rattled around the rim but eventually fell giving the Pirates a one point win.
