From Sunday to Monday, seven Belton High School students and 2 sponsors participated at the Missouri National DECA Leadership Conference at Lake of the Ozarks. The students that represented BHS were Kelsey Maurer, Nick Boeth, Jessica Miller, Pat McManon, Ryan Coovert, Ryan Clark and Jake Jones. The sponsors were Kara Lamfers and Sheila Gilchrist.

It was a state-wide conference with students from all over Missouri. All in all, there were about 1500 students from 12 different school districts.

The students had to pass a test, which was their first step to winning the marketing competition. Unfortunately, senior Kelsey Maurer did not pass the test, so all the different things did not count, even though she did better in the role play than in the test. She was given a situation in the role play and had to be the manager of the company and come up with a plan, which they had to present to the judge of the company. Maurer went to different speakers that talked about tools to help be a better leader and see what people look for at an interview, and the speaker gave tips on how to be better prepared for an interview.
This was Maurer’s 3rd year participating at the conference and she had the will to win. She is thinking about joining DECA in College because it helps her with marketing and business related professions.
“I really enjoyed doing this because I got the chance to talked to some people who are participating at Deca in College,” Maurer said.

Senior Nick Boeth did a great job on his test and was awarded a medal for having the highest test score out of any body there. He also had to do a role play and answer general marketing questions. He really enjoyed the balance between learning, going and listen to speakers, having fun and meeting new people. Boeth got the chance to listen to a speaker who explained the different kinds of personalities and reasons we fail and that helped him a lot understanding people.

Junior Jessica Miller teamed up with Junior Pat McManon to a leadership Acadamy where they were trained to be a Deca leader next year. Miller likes to participate in Deca as much as she can, and she really loves it.
“I did better in my role play than in my test,” Miller said.
This year’s success for the BHS Deca group was worthy of being noted, but it won’t stop there as they keep looking ahead and make themselves even better.

“The students did a really good job especially Senior Nick Boeth and they are going to practice more so they are successful at the Districts,”  BHS Deca sponsor Kara Lamfers said.
