Spring break trip switches tours

Students met surprise when the California trip took a major destination change. Those of whom were signed up and planning to go to San Francisco will now get the chance to have a much different experience when they head south to Puerto Rico.
The enrollment numbers for the California trip were too small to meet their needs. Journalism teacher Jim Carter, who’s heading up the trip, said that the alternate options to solve low enrollment fell through.
“Normally they’ll combine your school with another school that’s touring,” Carter said. “But no other schools are going that week.”
Instead of the attendants paying more money to cover the cost of the tour, they chose the option of changing tours. Although the location of the spring break trip changed, those attending will still travel the week of Mar. 27.
The trip, offered by Smithsonian Student Travel, will provide students the opportunity to visit the only rain forests on American soil, snorkel in pristine waters, climb through massive caves and much more. The seven-day trip includes flights, meals and the various activities on the itinerary.
Carter said that he had never imagined Puerto Rico as an option, but now is very excited about it.
“I knew very little about Puerto Rico, but now that I’ve looked over the itinerary, it’s amazing,” Carter said. “It will be nice to be in a warm location for spring break.”
Senior Shelby Stegemann said that she’s very excited about the trip.
“A lot of my friends are going and it’s a new and different place,” Stegemann said.
Senior Callie Porter said that she is looking forward to going to Puerto Rico because it’s somewhere different.
“It’s somewhere I wouldn’t usually go,” Porter said.
Stegemann said that she’s unsure whether or not the Puerto Rico experience will be better than the California experience would have been because she’s always wanted to go to California.
“I’m hoping it will be,” Stegemann said.
The trip is available for any BeltonHigh School students and parents. The group still has five open spots to fill, but the cutoff date to sign up is quickly approaching. Enrollment ends Monday Nov. 23.
The cost for the trip is $1,925. Anyone interested in going can pick up information from Carter in room 403. The plans for the trip are available online at http://field-trips.smithsonianstudenttravel.com/eliterature/DBD/F/PRJ.pdf.
