Seniors prepare for college

Seniors gather as they spend their last year at BHS.

When seniors go off to college they will begin to prepare for the new life ahead of them. The sad fact is that more than half of the seniors that go to college will dropout before they earn a four year degree and even more of the students that go straight to a four year university will also drop out.

College students drop out for many reasons such as financial and academic pressure, bad habits and lack of social fulfillment. All of these problems can be avoided if high school students prepare for the change of life properly and adequately. Students need to realize that one goes to college to learn. The main goal should be to get a degree and eventually a good job that one is happy in, not to consume as much alcohol as possible.

The pressure from financial needs doesn’t force many students to dropout. Only 38 percent of people who dropout said said financial needs forced them too. Money should not force people to dropout. If someone truly wants to go to college and get a degree there are ways to get it done, while some involve debt they should be considered an investment in a career. Students who go to college do not need to stress about the money. Student loans are okay, as long as they graduate and get a job. Student loans become a problem when people dropout. If one gets student loans they must commit to getting a degree.

Academic pressure is a choice. Students should not feel pressure from their school work. As long as they are trying as hard as they possibly can than that is all that matters. Even if they fail a class they can always make it up and turn it around. Nobody should stress about grades as long as they are trying their hardest.

Senioritis” is in full swing around BHS. Many seniors have began putting off work or not doing it at all. Senioritis as it is commonly called is when seniors stop working and paying attention at school because they are fed up and done with school. Senioritis causes GPA’s to fall and bad habits to form right before college. Many students continue to carry their senioritis into their freshman year of college. This causes them to fail and turn away from
college life because it seems too hard.

When students set foot on campus for the first time it can be scary and intimidating. Students are encouraged to join many clubs and organizations. This is what helps students adapt to their new life and make new friends. It is important to make new friends and move on in life when arriving at college. The friends that are made at college are much more likely to be life long friends than high school ones. These friends help with getting through college and the hard times. Joining clubs and being active are key components to making it through high school.

All of these tips are crucial to surviving the college life. Many students should begin preparing for college now by not allowing senioritis to take them over, changing the mindset that they begin college with, and joining clubs to meet people to become involved. College should be the best time of one’s life, but they should remember college is work as well as fun.
