The Company Theatre class presented the hilarious comedy of “Bobby Wilson Can Eat His Own Face” Dec. 16. The one act play was only an hour long, but supplied no shortage of laughs for the audience. After the cancellation of the performance last week because of the snow day, the actors were able to spend another week to make sure their performance was in tip top shape.
The play starts out with Bobby Wilson, a misunderstood kid, dealing with his possessed little sister, Wendy, his father who fears being abducted by aliens, and his clueless mother. At school his gym teacher, Coach Borney, accuses him of sexual harassment of the seductive Coach Ellie.
Because of these accusations he is sent to a “special” school, where the teachers don’t even teach, but rather throw books at him. When the teachers suspect he is going to blow up the school, Bobby is sent to a “very special school”, where he is the only student in the classroom of a drunk professor. Finally, Bobby decides to run away to a circus, near a nuclear waste plant, and along the way runs into a half man, half woman bus driver.
When he arrives at the circus, he decides to join the freak show, claiming he can eat his own face. There he meets the other freaks, including Telekinetic Lucy, played by senior Gabby Deaton. In one scene, the ringmaster (Dylan Corlee), distracts the audience as Lucy kicks a chair over, displaying her ” telekinetic abilities”. Bobby also has a stint with Omnivora, who can eat anything, including a fellow freak, Lobster Boy. But when Lucy is spying and finds Omnivora ready to eat Bobby, Lucy and Bobby head back to his home, hand in hand.
In the end, everything turns out okay for Bobby, portrayed by sophomore Nate Ulmo. The company class did a marvelous job of providing a laugh nearly every minute and making each of the 20 characters unique, especially since many characters had more than on person to play.
Even though the show was only performed one night, so there is no chance to see it again, it was a great reminder to students of how great the company performances are. The next performance is sure to be even more of a hit and it’s not to be missed.
