BHS students take part in New Years resolutions

Each year, people make New Years resolutions to better themselves. It is a basic tradition in American society that can be fun for some and for others a challenge. Many people don’t even follow through on the promises they make to themselves and others.

Sophomore Cody Hart said that his New Years’ resolution this year is to hang out with his friends more.

“One of my New Years’ resolutions is to see my friend more,” Hart said. “I want to hangout with Rosemary, Gabby and Brittany.”

It is however, hard to keep and follow those goals. So many of the New Years resolutions that are made each year are not kept. Senior Kyle Larkey said that people don’t keep their New Years resolutions because they don’t try hard enough to better themselves.

“People don’t follow through on their New Years resolutions because people are weak and they don’t try,” Larkey said. “My New Years resolution is to be less of a jerk to people.”

Some people use New Years resolutions as a way to better themselves, others use them to better the environment around them. Junior Brian McWilliams said that he is going to try and keep his room clean this year.

“My New Years resolution is to keep my room clean for this year,” McWilliams said. “I think people fail because they don’t care to follow through with them.”

A lot of people expect themselves to meet very high standards making success hard to come by. Hart said that he thinks people get disappointed when they fail.

“People fail because they make really high expectations for themselves and they end up not doing it,” Hart said.

New Years resolutions are a great way to accomplish things that are thought to be impossible, but high expectations can lead to failure and disappointment. So, one should consider all the possibilities when setting any type of goal.

After some research I found out that more than 75% of people who set New Year’s resolutions will break them within 3 months and almost one-third will break them by the end of January? Whether your goal is to stop smoking, lose weight, get in shape, break bad habits, pay off debt, or find true love; most people end up being another statistic.
