Students experience decline in grades second semester

Now that the first progress reports of the semester have been handed out, many students are realizing they need to step up their game if they are going to receive the same grades as they did last semester. When students came back to school after a three week break, most were just happy to see their friends again. A multitude of students slacked on their assignments, thinking they would be able to make it up later in the semester. But some are finding it hard to make up for a failed test or a missing assignment.

Sophomore Alexis Brumfield said that she thinks teachers are more irritable this semester than last, although she’s not sure why.

“Teachers seem to be a lot crabbier and more rude than last semester,” says Brumfield.

Perhaps their change in attitude has to do with students behaving differently. Teachers, as well as students, have noticed a change in the atmosphere at BHS, and it’s not a good thing. Not to mention nearly every senior has a bad case of senoritis. And, with over half of their last year of high school through with, many upperclassmen are finding it hard to concentrate on their studies.

Senior Kyle Bradley explained his opinion on the end of senior year in a unique way.

“If practice makes perfect and there’s no such thing as perfect, then what’s the point in practicing?” Bradley asked.

In simpler words, Bradley said he believes that there is no point in going to school senior year. But seniors should realize that colleges still look at seniors grades and it can still affect your chances of getting a scholarship.

If students have not been doing homework, hopefully they have been listening and paying attention. This semester many teachers are doing lesson plans based on what will be on the End of Course test, so the material they are learning now will be vital for studying.

However, there is hope for students. The first month back to school is always the hardest, so it is likely students will be able to get their grades up by third quarter report cards, like they do every year.

Sophomore Michelle Dungan says she thinks now that we’ve been in school for a while, students will probably start shaping up their acts.

“Now that people have gotten into the groove of things I think grades will gradually go up,” Dungan said.

Every year January and February are tough for students to get through. And after an extra long break, students have had an even harder time adjusting to school again. But now that we’ve been in school for a month and students have seen some of their laziness in their report cards, there is no doubt students will step up to the plate and get back on the track to good grades.
