Students do well in DECA Districts

On Thursday, Feb. 11 the Belton DECA members competed in the 2010 District III Regional Competition. There were 23 Belton DECA members competing in a variety of marketing categories throughout the day. Belton earned twelve trophies and nine medals at the awards ceremony. Twelve members will advance to the state competition in March. They can go to the state competition, which is Mar. 14-16, at the Lake of Ozarks.
This event took place at the Independence Center. Senior Kelsey Maurer was really excited about this competition where she had a lot of fun.
“I am really looking forward to state competition,” Maurer said. ”My goal is to go to Nationals in April.”
The Marketing II students had to write a research paper and compete in a role play. In the role play, they were given a business situation and the students had to find a solution to solve this businesses problem.
Those students got an award in the different categories: In the Business Services Marketing section, senior Nick Boeth got 3rd place, in Food Marketing junior Pat McMahon got 1st place, and senior Jessica Parsons got 5th place. Junior Austin Sims got 8th place in Quick Serve Restaurant Management. Another 3rd place was awarded to Maurer in Retail Merchandise; meanwhile, seniors Jake Jones and James Flath also got 3rd place in Hospitality Service Team Event. Parsons, seniors Suzanne King and Monica Silber all got 3rd place in Buying and Merchandising Research Event.
Then in Finance Research Event, Boeth and senior Ryan Coovert did really well and got 1st place. Jones and Flath participated in another team competition an got in the category Hospitality and Tourism Research Event 3rd place. A lot of students got 1st place in the Sports and Entertainment Research Event section: Maurer, senior Sabra Hoeppner and McMahon. Finally, Schmidt, seniors Brady Bunton and Ben Brown got 2nd place in the Learn & Earn Project.
